Job Summary

The Research Assistant will contribute to collaborative research that transforms people’s lives through new scientific findings by collecting quality data for the AKILI study while adhering to the standard operating procedures and ethical regulations. AKILI is a study on genetic characterization of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the Kenyan and South African populations.

Responsibilities

  1. Share information, education and support related to the AKILI study to families or guardians of potential eligible research participants
  2. Participate in conducting the informed consenting process for the AKILI study
  3. Participate in the screening and identification eligible participants among children and adolescents at the hospitals, schools or the community
  4. Participate in the collection of sociodemographic and phenotypic data using research electronic data capture software
  5. Participate in neurocognitive and/or psychiatric assessments of all study participants such as KSADS and SNAP-IV
  6. Participate in preparing proper, accurate and timely documentation of study-related activities.
  7. Participate in sensitization and/or training of teachers, community health promoters and any other stakeholders AKILI will engage. This will entail active involvement in preparing training materials on ADHD and the different neurocognitive and/or psychiatric assessments.
  8. Participate in ensuring data completeness and safety by working with other team members to crosscheck data against the AKILI’s enrolment checklist and ensuring that data has been uploaded to server before leaving the field/site of participant enrolment as highlighted in AKILI’s standard operating procedures and protocol.
    Ensure all participants receive their gifts, reimbursements and snacks as outlined in the protocol; and present all proofs of payment (payment and registration forms and receipts) for accounting.
  9. Participate in accounting for field expenditure as will be guided.
  10. Ensure proper use, storage and handing-over of all filed items assigned to you to minimize the risk of damage and to ensure their safety.
  11. Foster good working relationships with all stakeholders including all participants and their parents as well as the personnel in the different institutions we will engage – at the different hospitals, at schools and in the community.
  12. Any other responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • A minimum of Diploma in Psychology, Sociology, Nursing, Clinical medicine, Community Development or any other related field
  • Research background will be desirable

Relevant Experience

  1. 2 years’ work experience in research
  2. Flexible – able to work extra hours when needed
  3. Able to work with vulnerable populations such as those with neurological or mental health disorders
  4. Be computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

2. Clinical Nurse , Pain Management 

Department: Pain Management

Location: Nairobi, Kenya

The position holder will report to the Unit Supervisor, Pain Management.

Responsibilities:

  1. Prepare consultation rooms, ensuring stocks, linen, basic equipment and stationery are available at all times
  2. Perform basic assessment for all patients attending the clinic and designs care which is specific and appropriate to individual needs
  3. Confirm imaging and pathology reports and ensures these are available in the system
  4. Prepare patient for physician examination and acts as chaperone where necessary
  5. Assist the physician with clinic procedures where applicable and performs basic tests such as Glucose test and urinalysis
  6. Assess patient and family education needs and provides appropriate teaching based on their needs
  7. Arrange for patient’s admission to the wards when necessary
  8. Instruct patient   and family   regarding medications, investigations and   follow   up clinic appointments
  9. Observe infection control practices and maintains a clean and safe work environment for staff and patients
  10. Maintain open communication with the patient and the multidisciplinary team in the clinics to ensure customer satisfaction
  11. Participates in data collection and monitoring of clinic’s quality indicators
  12. Accountable for judicious and efficient use of resources i.e. accurate and timely billing of ward stock, drugs and consumables
  13. Responsible for safe use of equipment through cleaning, storage, per shift checks of the inventory and timely reporting of nonfunctional equipment to the unit supervisor
  14. Participates in unit based continuing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC), audits, spot checks and skill checks.

Requirements:

  1. RN from a recognized School of Nursing or University
  2. Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya
  3. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  4. Demonstrate evidence-based knowledge of current practices in medical-surgical nursing
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
